The dreaded report and other...things (Attn: Michael, the office)
It had been a busy morning for one Holly Flax, and she had only just been there about an hour or so.  She was beginning to think Toby was not very motivated to get any work done during his last few days there. But the office certainly kept her on her toes. Pam Beesly was going to be gone for three months at art school, so they were in the process of finding a temporary replacement for her. Michael's way of accomplishing that was a bit on the... unorthodox side. She'd explained the report situation to one of the cameras earlier while she was in the breakroom getting a drink. "Some of these papers just need to be signed by Michael, which surely doesn't take an act of God to accomplish, right?" she shrugged. "Then again... they weren't really bosom buddies, were they? Not that I blame him. Toby was kind of a drag. And Michael is very funny." Cue little smile here, before she quickly added in. "Humor is such a great way to boost morale and productivity." Which brought her to today, where she could be found carrying a stack of papers to Michael's office, mostly the infamous report he needed to work on and some things to sign, dropping a few in the process. But Kevin was very helpful to pick them up for her. She somehow managed to knock on Michael's door awkwardly without dropping anything else.

Michael was sitting at his desk, predictably procrastinating. He'd had his platoons of toy soldiers fighting a war for the past two weeks, and there were heavy casualties on both sides. He was bored. He took a pencil and threw it up at the ceiling, watching it stick in the cheap tile.

He heard the knock on his door and looked at it for a moment. "Yeah. Uh...Come in?"

Holly somehow managed to open the door while not dropping anymore papers, then stuck her head into his office. "Hey, Michael," she offered that friendly little smile of hers, before heading inside. "I brought those papers for you to sign. I highlighted where you should sign, so I thought I'd just stick around and point you in the right direction for each." Her eyebrows rose when she noticed the soldiers. "Who's winning? The North or the South?" she joked dryly.

"Hey Holly!!" Michael replied enthusiastically when he saw her walk through the door. "You need me to sign those? I will...a little later. I have a bunch of really important things that I have to do first." He looked at his soldiers. "It's Dunder Mifflin versus Staples. Dunder Mifflin is winning so far, though Staples has pulled a few dirty tricks."

Jim sighed at his desk, stood up and headed to Michael's office. Granted, Michael's office was only three steps behind him... He knocked on the open door, seeing Holly. "Hey, Michael?" he said. "I think we need to talk about something." This really had gone on long enough.
thegreatscott on July 29th, 2008 05:26 pm (UTC)
"Jimbo!" Michael smiled and waved toward his soldiers. Dunder Mifflin's winning." Michael's face grew concerned when Jim said that they needed to talk. "Come on in, sit down. I'm always listening. And so is Holly, here. What's the matter?" He put on his best Yoda impression, "Listening, the council is."
James "Jim" Halpert: grinprankster_jim on July 29th, 2008 07:45 pm (UTC)
Sighing again, Jim shut the door behind him, and sat down, smiling at Holly. "You need to hire a new receptionist for the summer. And by 'for the summer' I mean until Pam gets back. And she is going to come back," he said. "I can't keep answering the phones, and Angela can't keep sending out faxes, and Andy can't keep making copies."

Michael sighed and leaned back in his chair. "I thought you were going to come in here and lecture me about that report. This is better. Jim, Pam's been a thorn in my side for a while now. She's become like Toby. We can't afford to have her come back. I've already put the request for her transfer to the New York office in to corporate." After a pause, he cocked his head to the side. "And who told Andy to make copies? That was Dwight's job. He's been on my back lately, something about wolves. Anyway, I've been looking into replacing Pam. Jan needs a job, we could use her."

Holly did smirk a little at Michael's Yoda impression. Okay, so it was old, but she was still amused. But she quickly wiped the expression away. After Michael spoke about losing Pam and hiring Jan, however, she glanced at Jim before clearing her throat a little and addressing Michael. "As much of a drag as I'm sure Toby was... I'm not sure hiring Jan would be a good idea, Michael. There is her pregnancy, of course, and her past with Dunder-Mifflin and you." Well, she had access to all the files, after all. Holly probably knew more about some of the employees than they thought. "I'm afraid I agree with Jim about hiring someone temporarily, someone just as efficient as, ah, Jan." She nodded, putting on a little smile.

Michael scowled. He wasn't sure he liked Holly disagreeing with him, it reminded him of Toby. So many things did, lately. He agreed, though, that Jan was pregnant and that her taking over Pam's position might not be such a great idea.

"Well, if you're just looking for a *temporary* replacement, Jan is only *temporarily* going to be pregnant. But, I was thinking of something more permanent...Maybe we could look into temps? Have someone like Ryan, who we tried out temporarily and then moved him into a permanent position? That would probably be our best bet. We need someone who will boost morale around here. Cheer on the troops. I can't be the only one." He looked at Jim, "And we certainly don't need another Pam. Maybe they could show cleavage every once in a while, or put on some makeup or something. We don't need the first person that a client sees in sales to be all frumpy. Sorry, Jim. It's the truth."

Holly was pretty sure she didn't like the idea of Jan working there. As Michael spoke, she had to stifle an amused little grin, glancing at Jim. After he'd finished, Holly just smiled in that friendly way of hers, then looked over at Jim. "Jim, could I please talk to Michael privately for a moment? Thank you."

She turned back to Michael and pulled up a chair to sit across from him at his desk. She paused a moment, before talking conversationally. "How are you doing, Michael? Are you stressed about Jan and her baby? I'm not Toby, you know. You can talk to me." She gave a dry little smile.

Michael watched Jim leave, feeling a little guilty that the guy he considered probably his best friend had wanted to talk about something, but was interrupted. No matter; he'd call him into his office after Holly was done.

He looked at Holly for a moment, and smiled. "I'm actually pretty excited. It's not every day that you find out that you're going to be a father. I am going to attend a lamaze class in a day or so, and I'm not really sure what that is, but it sounds like a blast. Maybe they'll get to see my yoda impression, if all goes well. Why do you ask?" He was really attracted to Holly, and it kind of tore him apart a little still to be attached to Jan in this way. Having a child, though, was all he'd ever wanted. It was a built in friend, and he had to make sure that he was there for this child, whom he planned to raise as his own.

"I just understand how stress and that kind of excitement can sometimes affect your judgment at work, or make it a little harder to think," she smiled, rolling her eyes a bit. "That's what it does to me, anyway. Yoga helps me unwind. Its really relaxing - I don't know, maybe you could try it sometime? I know a good place." She nodded, glancing down at her hands a moment in an almost shy way. "Lamaze should be good, too." Oh, she hoped to help Jim out with this conversation as well and she was getting there, but she did enjoy talking to Michael. She wasn't quite sure yet why people had told her he was so difficult to work with.
thegreatscott on July 31st, 2008 11:58 am (UTC)
Michael raised an eyebrow. Stress? Never. "Work is where I come to de-stressify. I love every minute that I'm here with my family, and you could ask anyone here, and they'd tell you that they feel the same way. How many places have you worked where you could call your boss your best friend?" Michael stopped for a moment, looking at Holly. "This is where my judgment is at it's clearest. I've never made a mistake here. Except once or twice, but that was Dwight's fault. I'd like to try yoga sometime, but I'm a man. That sounds like a chick thing, like getting manicures or something." Yoga was another thing that he wasn't sure of, but suspected women went there to gossip about the latest Sisterhood of the Flying Pants movie, or whatever it was.
